Crime out of control

Here's some of the news headlines I found tonight on Aertel on RTE:

"NI murder linked to loyalist feud"

"Appeal renewed over Leixlip death"

"Man charged over €3m drug seizure"

"Scene search in Cork murder probe"

"Male critical after Dublin attack"

Crime seems to be spiralling out of control.

I'm sure you heard about the two murders over the weekend. A 51-year-old man in Leixlip was brutally murdered in the driveway of his bungalow just because he tried to protect two people who had sought refuge in his garden from a gang of youths. As well as that, gardaí believe that the fatal shooting of a 29-year-old man in Ballincollig, a sprawling residential town west of Cork city, was the work of a professional hit-man. Gunned down in full view of his partner, one-and-a-half year old child and a group of local teenagers, the victim was known to gardaí.

Why does crime seem to be such a problem right now? And what are we to do about it? What's the solution? How are we to feel safe living in a society such as this?
