IRA are 'Patriots' - McLaughlin

Sinn Fein chairman Mitchel McLaughlin has rejected a suggestion put to him in an interview on BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the IRA are "a bunch of gangsters".

When asked whether he would accept that the IRA are "a bunch of gangsters",he said: "No, of course not.I think that they are people who are patriots. That is not to ignore the fact that they make mistakes and sometimes very very horriffic and tragic mistakes.

"But in the main I think that the people of Ireland recognise in the long history of the IRA that we are dealing with patriots."

This is more obscene nonsense from Mitchel McLaughlin.I think Irish people, in the main, can distinguish between the IRA who fought between 1919 - 1921 and the present lot who are indeed nothing but gangsters.Sinn Fein are truly stuck in a time warp if they feel the present IRA are the equivalent of the IRA of the early 20th century. The world and Ireland has changed dramatically since then.
Most Irish people today were not alive when Collins' IRA were fighting for a republic. The ideology of Sinn Fein is terribly dangerous and must be condemned by all decent-minded nationalists.
