Child-rapist agrees to castration
A US man who admitted raping two young girls has agreed to be castrated to avoid serving a life prison sentence.
Keith Raymond Fremin, 42, was sentenced to 25 years without parole for molesting the two sisters, who were 11 and 13 at the time of the attacks in 1999.
Judge Donald Fendlason said he would revoke the lighter sentence if Fremin did not undergo the surgery by August 18.
The victims, now 17 and 19, were in court in Covington, Louisiana, and agreed to the plea deal.
A terrible and sickening crime and my heart goes out to the victims of this vile man but can we consider castration as a fitting punishment?
Obviously it's not an easy issue. Those who support this will say that the man deserved this after his disgraceful crime while those who oppose it will say that it's simply mutilation and that it's not right.
Personally, I don't see a problem with it. In a situation like this where a man does such a despicable thing to defenceless members of society, in my view he deserves such a punishment. It ensures he won't do it again anyway. I can see both sides of the argument and I can understand those who oppose it but I'll lose no sleep over this man's punishment. People who commit these acts are scum and are fortunate they are not getting hanged over them.
Like I said though, it's a controversial issue. What are your thoughts on it?
