Saturday Survey:2004 Special

Since 2004 has recently come to an end, rather than reviewing the week's events instead I will review the events of 2004 and offer my opinions on the individuals of 2004.
So without further ado:

Hero of the Year: Viktor Yuschenko:Not only did he survive a poison attempt on his life which left him disfigured,he went on to lead his supporters in Ukraine to stand up to a vote which had clearly been fraudulent in allowing Viktor Yanukovych to win.
The original vote would be annulled due to fraud and Yuschenko won the re-run by a clear margin.

Make no mistake this was a historic moment for Ukraine and indeed the world as democracy was put to the test.Thankfully,it would seem, democracy prevailed. One has to admire the courage and character of Mr.Yuschenko to bounce back from the difficulties he was faced with to emerge victorious in the presidential election re-run.
A hero of Ukraine and a hero of 2004.

Villain of the Year: Abu Musab al-Zarqawi:This vile individual emerged in 2004 due to a campaign of murder and terror which involved beheadings including the despicable beheading of British hostage Ken Bigley.
Al-Zarqawi renamed his group from Tawhid and Jihad to al Qaeda in Iraq and Bin Laden was purported to have endorsed al-Zarqawi in his recent tape.
The USA has placed a $25 million bounty on al-Zarqawi-the same amount as Bin Laden.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that hopefully in 2005 al-Zarqawi is brought to justice for the horrible acts he has committed and supported. He is a disgrace to his religion and a disgrace to the human race.

Irish Person of 2004: Mary McAleese:Fought off the challenge(cough)by Dana to remain President and she is enjoying massive popularity. You can't ask for much more than that.

Irish Dunce of 2004: Cornelius Horan:This idiot in the kilt went and ruined the men's Olympic marathon when he pushed Brazil's Vanderlei de Lima off the road when he was leading.
De Lima in the end finished third.
The former Irish priest embarassed Ireland on a global stage with this act of lunacy.Goodness knows what the Brazilians thought of us at that moment!
I think this man should have been locked up for a couple of months over in Brazil. That would've been a suitable punishment!

Celebrity of 2004: Sir Bob Geldof:So what if I'm choosing an Irishman!20 years after the release of the famous Band Aid single,Do They Know It's Christmas was re-released and although it was an atrocious rendition of the original classic it still shows Sir Bob cares about the plight of people living in poverty.
See he's not just using that knighthood to get into places!(note-may not be true)

Sports Star of 2004: Lance Armstrong:In September,Armstrong won the Tour de France for a record-breaking sixth time. This great feat is even more incredible when you consider that Armstrong bounced back from a cancer that almost killed him in 1996.
What an amazing athlete.

Irish Sports Star of 2004: Brian O'Driscoll:I must confess that had it not been for a certain scandal I might have awarded this to another Irishman however I will pay tribute to this great rugby player for helping inspire Ireland to winning the Triple Crown which also included a victory over England-the World Champs!

Quote of 2004: "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we.They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." - George W.Bush.

Hard to believe this guy runs the most powerful nation on earth!
