Friday Fun-News in Brief

This week Education Minister Mary Hanafin asked the Curriculum Board to prioritise a new maths syllabus for Leaving Cert students. Ms Hanafin said she had made the request due to the high failure rate in both Ordinary and Higher Level maths in recent years.

I would suggest to Ms Hanafin that she draw up a syllabus with questions that kids are going to find interesting. We need to get kids motivated. For example:

If a TD earns €100,000 a year and accepts a €50,000 brown envelope as payment on the side, how much money does the TD now have?

Better questions like these would be far more beneficial to students. Well, it might prepare them for a career in politics at least...

Also this week, the new series of TV talent show The X Factor was launched.

Great news! Hopefully they'll produce another top quality star like last year's winner...uh, you know...your man. You know who I mean right? That guy...with the suit?

In other news this week, the artist formerly known as Sean Combs changed his name yet again. In recent years he has gone from from Puffy to Puff Daddy to P Diddy.

But P Diddy has now dropped the P, and as of today will be known simply as Diddy.

Hmm. I wonder if he'll go and change his name again at some point? If so, may I suggest the name 'Dud'...

And finally, this week it was revealed that Dubliners spend more time on the telephone that anyone else in the country.

The next-most-talkative counties were identified as Meath, Monaghan, Kildare and Cork, while people in Wexford, Carlow, Waterford, Roscommon and Mayo were found to spend the least amount of time on the phone.

As well as that, the survey concluded that people from Sligo still don't have phones. Apparently shouting very loudly still does the job:

"HERE MICKO, D' YE WANT TO GO FOR A PINT?"

"OK SO, TOM! JUST LET ME FINISH UP ME TEA!
