Thursday Thoughts:Solution to the Problem
On last week's edition of Thursday Thoughts I outlined what I felt an Irish government ought to do to help pave the way for Irish unity. To get the unionists to the discussion table so to speak.
Now I will outline what I would be willing to offer to the unionists and nationalists in Ireland.
I believe it would be an acceptable compromise to both communities and could enjoy support from both communties.I believe it could offer a solution to the problem.
Here's what I believe a United Ireland should be based upon:
Now I will outline what I would be willing to offer to the unionists and nationalists in Ireland.
I believe it would be an acceptable compromise to both communities and could enjoy support from both communties.I believe it could offer a solution to the problem.
Here's what I believe a United Ireland should be based upon:
- Nationalists would give up on their hope for a republic while unionists would give up on the division of Ireland.
- Britain would enjoy influence in Ireland akin to what the Republic enjoys presently in the North.
- Enshrined into law would be the monarchy's rights.I would favour a situation not unlike Andorra with Ireland having both a President and a Monarch.Since I would expect Ireland to be in the Commonwealth, the Queen could look after Irish interests when it concerns the Commonwealth while the President could look after domestic issues that the Queen could not.
- There would be a new anthem-Inclusive to all.
- The complete removal of the British Army.
- No chance of a return to the UK unless a majority of the island wants it.
- A new flag which enjoys support from both communities.Perhaps the former flag with the harp on a green background would be the most suitable option.
- The united Ireland would run on a federal basis.Power would be devolved to the four provinces if possible but if this is not workable another arrangement would be found, however Ulster will be allowed its own body to look after its affairs.
- Issues that affect the island will be decided by the entire government and decision making will be a fair process.
- All Irish politicans must take an oath to promise to uphold law and order in Ireland and serve all Irish people.
I believe this is a United Ireland that suits both communities and can bring a resolution to the long conflict.
