Monday Madness - OBE farce
I'm disgusted to hear that Sinn Féin have challenged the SDLP over the incredibly important issue of - the British Honours system.
It follows the decision of SDLP member Tom Kelly to accept an OBE in the Queen’s New Year's Honours list.
Sinn Féin's John O'Dowd raged how it was inconceivable that any "so-called" nationalist or republican could become embroiled in a system that has colonialism at its core.
He claims the decision appears to suggest a u-turn on party policy and a serious insult to the millions of Irish who have suffered at the hands of British Imperialism.
Terry Wogan pictured insulting millions of Irish people.
I'm really disappointed at Sinn Féin's reaction to this issue. These Honours are not my cup of tea personally but I don't see the need to have such a hostile view of Irish people who do choose to accept them.
It's quite telling that Sinn Féin's John O'Dowd uses the word 'inconceivable' when discussing the issue of Irish people accepting British Honours. That's Sinn Féin's problem right there. As long as they continue to react with hostility to all things British and to regard respecting Britishness as 'inconceivable', then for unionists in Ireland, the idea of a United Ireland will sadly remain inconceivable.
